iPhone 3G and why I’ve waited a year

   new iPhone is great, but without ‘all inclusive’ data pack from cellular provider it will be hard to afford for all this nice stuff

   I am sure mobile providers will think of that.
   It is hard to imagine (or am I too naive) that the iPhone service plan won’t have lots of free bytes of transfer for us to use.

   We’ve been through this already. Please avoid saying “I like new iphone 3g with gps, because it’s 3g and has gps”. The fact that it’s 3g doesn’t matter a tiny bit really. I am the owner of the first generation, so I can tell that. EDGE connections in our country are just enough and 3g is not worth price you need to pay to your operator atm. Besides, it’s not that useful, since in big cities, you are mostly in wifi range, and outside cities you don’t have 3g anyway. Plus, no video chats…

   In reality, all that new iphone has over the old one is the gps, which is nice, but quite disappointing in terms of “value added”. That ofc doesn’t matter that I won’t get one But this time I would prefer to get new one using official canal and don’t spend time tracking hackintosh and blogs of all those ingenious hackers (hi geohot!) and worry about every new update.

   As for the price, just leave the speculations and don’t take for granted what’s been said far away in America. We live in Poland and we will be always ripped off 3,6,10 times more than we should actually pay for stuff.

   I’m glad that you’ve noticed the singlest most important change, though. It’s not that iphone is so great (though it is :P), as many said, the functionality is just standard. Interface is cool, ok, touch is cool, but it’s easy for other brands to get touch. It’s a bit harder to work on the interface (hello Windows Mobile!), but they will eventually get that. But what makes iphone great already and will make it even better is Appstore and iTunes right from your phone. I’m afraid people not having iphone still don’t really get how it’s like. Myself, having jailbroken iphone and access to Installer - it’s just so ubercool to notice new apps every day.

   I went to the store earlier today and nearly bought one, but I decided against it in the end. I’m still worried about not being able to do what I want with it one handed, the cool design isn’t worth the loss in functionality.

   Though that’s probably just an issue with me, I’ll keep messing around with them and will probably end up picking one up when my current contract ends.

   Iphone is just fine operated by one hand. I rarely use my second hand, browsing via safari, writing sms, answering calls. Right thumb will do just fine.

   Unfortunatelly it’s interface rocks but it’s functionality / configurability / openness sucks. And technologically it’s still 2 years behind Nokias. 3G? Everybody uses HSDPA already (and no, 3G is not fast enough to use Google Maps or browse the web comfortably). That’s why I’m waiting for HTC Dream - one of the first implementations of Google Android.
